Advanced Extraction Modules

Our waterways are not what they should be. Phosphorus concentrations in 63% of New Zealand's rivers are above guideline levels with significant pollutants coming from hundreds of community wastewater discharges. But as environmental regulation accordingly tightens, our communities are struggling to fund massive upfront capital expenditure for increasingly complex wastewater treatment upgrades.

To address this, we have established proof-of-principal for 'Advanced Extraction Modules' (AEMs) that can be 'added-on' to markedly upgrade water quality without the need for an expensive 'capital build'.

Extraction modules for solids, nitrates, and phosphates have been developed and, at small-scale, have been demonstrated up to 95% effective, thereby transforming 'murky' effluent to a clear discharge. Our researchers now aim to scale it up and take this technology through to market readiness.

In the example above the initial wastewater treatment is shown as waste stabilisation ponds however initial treatment could also be other treatment technologies such as Activated Sludge, Tickling Filters or Onsite systems.
